Glowfair Festival 2017

March - May  2017

Four Models in Costume at Ottawa Glowfair festival

This project was commissioned by the Bank Street Business Improvement Association (BIA) for Ottawa’s 2017 Glowfair Festival.

I created eight costumes for the festival's greeters for ambiance and photo opportunities.

Approximate costs for all eight customs: $4000+

Research

The theme of the festival was Day and Night. I created several mood boards to build a direction for the theme. I drew on ideas from Solarpunk and Cyberpunk, for Day and Night respectively.

Design

Due to time and budget constraints, we simplified the concepts.

The Day designs were inspired by the idea of bringing wildlife into the city centre, with dragonflies, butterflies and deer.

The Night designs were inspired by the idea of bringing the night sky and its stars down to the earth.

Production

While pieces like the Dragonflies and the Deer were created from the ground up, other pieces like the Rainbow and the Night sky were created with thrifted and upcycled garments.

The Deer’s antlers were created by building a metal frame on a headband, and then plaster was added to the metal frame. The antlers were then painted by hand.

The wings for the Dragonflies and Butterfly were created by layering decorative leaves and tulle to emphasize the organic source. The wings were then mounted to elastic straps for ease of dressing the greeter.
